A process for ‘water-transfer’ printing, also commonly known as ‘hydrographics,’ that applies printed designs to three-dimensional surfaces and that is durable enough not to need an additional protective coat. This process can be used on various substrates including polymers fiberglass, wood, ceramics, and metal. It provides material reduction in the form of unnecessary secondary coating that serves to reduce material usage. The printing process involves supplying a pre-printed transfer film into a water transfer tub, so that the transfer film is kept afloat on the water. Then, the object to be pattern-transferred is immersed in the water and brought up ‘through’ the film surface while the tub is provided with pressured air onto the transfer film to eliminate wrinkles. This creates a haptic texture of up to 15 microns (0.59 mil) in height after application and UV curing. Unlike standard hydrographic processes, it does not require a topcoat for surface protection after application to the object. Applications include decorative trims and components in automotive interiors.
